Join the Colby College Cinema Studies Department and the students of "Topics in Film Theory" for a very special screening of
The Pervert's Guide to Ideology. The second of three collaborations between filmmaker Sophie Fiennes and philosopher/provocateur extraordinaire Slavoj Žižek,
The Pervert’s Guide switches between scenes from over twenty films across film history and the latter—impishly inserting himself in said scenes—bringing all of his characteristic wit and sharpness to bear in pointed, deft film analysis. Informed by a deep engagement with cinema, world history, and continental philosophy, Žižek models a mode of cultural critique that is as engaging as it is illuminating. As a result, the film becomes an example of how to watch and more importantly, of how to read cinema. More specifically,
The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology helps us navigate the dynamic, contentious relationship between film and ideology, telling us how the former teaches us not what to desire, but how.
