SAVING FACE, a 2004 lesbian dramedy, stars Michelle Krusiec as Wilhelmina Pang, or Wil, whose mother, Ma (played by Joan Chen), tries in vain to set her up with eligible New York bachelors. Wil instead falls for Vivian, a ballerina pursuing her passion for contemporary dance. Ma, divorced and suddenly pregnant, moves in with Wil to avoid shame from their tight-knit Chinese-American community. "In SAVING FACE, the parallel mother-daughter stories elevate the film, offering a refreshing tale of queer-straight solidarity against patriarchy and a repudiation of fear, shame, pride and prejudice" (The Guardian).
