Some Oscar handicappers are pegging Poor Things as this year’s most likely Oscar frontrunner, albeit a most unusual one, following its rapturous receptions at the New York, Telluride and Berlin Film Festivals. Why? “This is Barbie on absinthe”–CineVue. “Stuffed with rude delights, spry wit, radical fantasy and breathtaking design elements, the movie is a feast. And Emma Stone gorges on it in a fearless performance that traces an expansive arc most actors could only dream about”–The Hollywood Reporter. “Everything in it – every frame, every image, every joke, every performance – gets a gasp of excitement”–The Guardian. Bella Baxter (Stone) is brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation–and Poor Things sees liberation and equality as artistic invention and pure fun.
