Mira Nair's 1991 MISSISSIPPI MASALA is a downright sexy film with some serious social commentary. Mina (played by newcomer Sarita Choudhury), the daughter of Indian immigrants who own a motel in rural Mississippi, and Demetrius (an unexpectedly hunky Denzel Washington), a Black American carpet cleaner, develop a star-crossed relationship against the conventions of their respective cultures and families. "The film, especially in a deliberately paced and sensuous sex scene, is profoundly alive to Mina and Demetrius’s love for one another. Every flirtatious gesture, glance, and touch is spiked with the intense feeling of youthful desire" –Slant Magazine.
