This abridged, English-language version of Massenet’s enchanting fairy-tale opera stars beloved mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as the rags-to-riches title princess, with Emmanuel Villaume on the podium. The whimsical production by Laurent Pelly draws inspiration from a child’s storybook, with larger-than-life costumes and zany characters. Running under two hours, this is a particularly good title for younger audiences. Charles Perrault’s classic telling of the Cinderella story is an excellent source for an opera—providing color, romance, and relatable themes for audiences of all ages.
