18-year-old Totone spends most of his time drinking beer and partying in the Jura region with his group of friends. When tragedy befalls his father, Totone is thrust into the unexpected and very adult role of looking after his younger sister and their failing family farm. Desperate for money, Totone assumes even more responsibility when he enters a cash competition for the best Comté cheese in the region in an attempt to win the gold medal at the agricultural competition and a hefty sum of 30,000 euros.
A verité look at the hardscrabble life of French agriculture,
Holy Cow is simultaneously a moving underdog tale and an ode to humanity's powerful love of cheese. "A heartwarming coming-of-age story about a raw boy slowly ripening to manhood, this impressively mature debut is earthy, compassionate and never too cheesy."—Larushka Ivan-Zadeh,
The Times.
