We couldn't resist capping off our Love Makers + Rule Breakers series with Stanley Kubrick's daring final film, EYES WIDE SHUT. Tom Cruise plays Dr. Bill Harford, who becomes plagued by jealousy and sexual frustration when his wife (played by his then-wife Nicole Kidman) confesses to her fantasies about another man. Visually the film is stunning; Kubrick lit the scenes himself and authoritatively directed Cruise and Kidman to their limits. Kubrick reportedly demanded countless takes for every scene, and even Todd Field (director of the recently groundbreaking TÁR and a fellow Mainer!) in a supporting role, spent six months shooting his part.
