Art + Conversation Program Premiere: Miracles on the Border: Retablos of Mexican Migrants to the United States

This two-part program features a conversation between Priscilla Doel and Douglas Massey, who will discuss the retablo art tradition, how these objects inform migration research, as well as highlight immigrant contributions to the state of Maine:

About the Speakers:

Douglas Massey is Henry G. Bryant Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs at Princeton University, with a joint appointment in The Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. Douglas Massey’s research focuses on international migration, race, housing discrimination, education, and urban poverty. Together with Jorge Durand, he is the co-author of Miracles on the Border: Retablos of Mexican Migrants to the United States.

Priscilla Doel is Professor Emerita of Spanish and Portuguese at Colby College, where she taught for 45 years. Her research is centered on the Portuguese White Fleet in St. John’s, Newfoundland. She is an advocate for Spanish-speaking migrant workers in Maine and is a docent at the Colby College Museum of Art.
