Spell “prestidigitation.”
These are the words that change Akeelah’s (Keke Palmer) life. After participating in the spelling bee at Crenshaw Middle School, Akeelah is approached by Dr. Joshua Larabee (Laurence Fishburne), a visiting English professor that sees her potential. Dr. Larabee invites Akeelah to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, a prestigious competition that attracts the best spellers—and Dr. Larabee believes Akeelah can win. Struggling with her mother Tanya’s (Angela Bassett) reluctance, her history of truancy, jealous friends, and racism, Akeelah must find strength in herself and support from her community to win the Spelling Bee and prove everyone wrong.
