A PROPHET, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes in 2009, is the story of Malik El Djebena, a 19-year-old, illiterate Franco-Algerian inmate who’s been sentenced to six years in prison and the “thick network of warring tribes he finds himself mired in and ultimately forced to master” (Variety). When it comes to hard-bitten crime cinema, Jacques Audiard has few equals in Europe, and his violent, gripping prison drama shows him extending his range with unimpeachable command.
