Clay Studio Coordinator

Regular, Full Time (40 hours/week), Salary; Exempt Status

Reports to: Education Manager

The Clay Studio Coordinator oversees daily operations of The Art of Clay Studio and provides a welcoming and supportive environment for all program participants and visitors. The Clay Studio Coordinator is an extremely cooperative, adaptive, and professional member of the Waterville Creates (WC) team. The coordinator ensures all aspects of this busy community clay studio are efficiently and professionally managed and serves as the primary contact for the clay studio.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities      

  • Maintains a clean, safe, healthy, and orderly clay studio environment, which includes maintenance of basic equipment, including but not limited to kilns, pottery wheels, kiln shelving, slab roller, tools, etc.
  • Manages clay studio inventory. Creates orders and receives clay, glaze, tools, and other studio-related supplies.
  • Tracks general studio attendance and manages monthly open studio memberships, including expiration dates and renewals, payments, storage, and compliance with studio rules.
  • Ensures access for members and maintains an overall balanced schedule for classes, demonstrations, and events; screens registered students and prospective members for intermediate or advanced classes to ensure appropriate skill levels.
  • Serves as primary point of contact for the clay studio and ensures regular and timely correspondence with open studio members, clay students, instructors, and staff.
  • Schedules and performs regular bisque and glaze firings to ensure timely and accurate firing of student and member work.
  • Maintains and enforces good studio practice and protocols among all clay studio members, students, and instructors.
  • Works with education manager to develop ongoing clay programming, coordinate clay classes and workshops, including clay camps for youth, After School Art Club, and other educational activities. Identifies visiting artists and instructors for future clay programs.
  • Stays informed of state-wide clay opportunities, workshops, and events, including participation in Maine Pottery Tour, Maine Craft Weekend, and others.
  • Attends weekly planning meetings and shares upcoming events/classes, attendance, registrations, and other pertinent information.
  • Develops a comprehensive yearly budget and monitors expenses throughout the year.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in ceramics or equivalent experience is required, as well as a passion and dedication to arts, culture, artists, and community initiatives.
  • Strong working knowledge of ceramics studio infrastructure, including kilns, studio equipment, clay, glazes, tools, safety procedures, pottery skills, and techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage projects simultaneously, as well as establish and meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional organizational skills—can deftly toggle between administrative and studio responsibilities.
  • Capable of working independently as well as part of a team, is enthusiastic, reliable, and a creative problem solver.
  • Clay-related teaching experience is highly desirable.
  • Computer proficiency desired including Outlook, Excel, Microsoft Word, Dropbox, Airtable.

 

Physical Demands/Conditions/Requirements

Work is performed in a general clay studio environment. Medium lifting (up to 50 pounds) required. Full range of physical mobility including walking, sitting, standing, stooping, carrying, reaching, and manual dexterity is required.

Annual Salary: $59,000

Temporary; Non-Exempt Status; $18/hour

The Production Assistant supports festival leadership and venue managers in coordinating and maintaining all festival events. This role requires effective communication and problem-solving to address ongoing needs and provides broad exposure to various aspects of film festival operations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality customer service at points of sale and serve as a resource for inquiries from patrons and guests.
  • Coordinate venue and small equipment setup, including ticket scanners, printers, computers, public-facing displays, decorations, and other technology.
  • Package festival orders for patrons and welcome packets for guests.
  • Serve concessions, including alcohol and prepared foods in compliance with state regulations.
  • Abide by Waterville Creates employee handbook policies and uphold MIFF code of conduct policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills Experience

  • Familiarity with common computer and web systems, and the ability to learn new software and IT systems.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Experience handling cash transactions.
  • TIPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) certification, or ability to complete training required. Necessary training will be covered by Waterville Creates.
  • Ability to work independently with keen attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and provide constructive feedback.
  • Availability to work afternoons, evenings, and weekend shifts throughout the Maine International Film Festival.
  • Prior film festival or large event experience preferred but not required.
