Ten years in the making,
Maya and the Wave tells the extraordinary story of Maya Gabeira, a professional surfer who began competing at fifteen and went pro at just seventeen years old. Traveling to Nazaré, Portugal, to become the first woman to surf the giant waves, Maya's life is turned upside down when she suffers a devastating wipeout and nearly drowns. In need of major spine surgery and extensive physical therapy, Maya also suffers from the cruel mockery of the male big wave surfers that dominate the sport and the loss of her sponsorship. Refusing to give up, Maya sets her sights on a new goal: setting the world record for the biggest wave a woman has ever surfed and receiving the recognition she is owed for it.
Winner of the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival,
Maya and the Wave "is a by-turns exhilarating and infuriating exploration of how, for a woman, talent is often not enough to cut through."—Nikki Baughan,
