A timeless story for Arts in Bloom…young Mary Lennox is sent to her absent uncle’s mansion after she becomes an orphan. Overseen by austere Mrs. Medlock (played by the beloved Dame Maggie Smith), Mary doesn’t have much freedom. While furtively exploring the house, she discovers her late aunt’s locked-up, neglected garden. The garden proves to be a magical place for Mary, the maid’s son Dickon, and Mary’s bed-ridden, bitter cousin Colin Craven. “It is a work of beauty, poetry and deep mystery, and watching it is like entering for a time into a closed world where one’s destiny may be discovered” –Roger Ebert. Not that you need another reason to see this masterpiece, but did we mention MIFF20 guest Roger Deakins (Karl Struss Legacy Award honoree) directs the cinematography? Named one of the top 50 films to see by age 15 by the British Film Institute, this classic on the big screen should not be missed.
