Loosely based on a true story,
The Lost King focuses very much on amateur historian Philippa Langley (wonderfully incarnated by the always-wonderful Sally Hawkins), though her quest is abetted by the long-dead king himself, who casually materializes to both she and us. Philippa believes she has made the archeological find of the century: the lost burial site of King Richard III. She takes on Britain's most eminent historians, forcing them to rethink the legacy of one of the most controversial rulers in English history. Great British director Stephen Frears (
Philomena,
The Queen,
Dangerous Liaisons,
The Grifters) discovers in
The Lost King “an underdog story that proves a perfect vehicle for Hawkins’s reliably winning screen presence”—
