In 1860s San Francisco, fiercely independent Vivienne (the fantastic Vicky Krieps, of
Phantom Thread and
Corsage) finds herself drawn to taciturn Olsen (Viggo Mortenson, who also directs here) and accompanies him to his remote Nevada homestead. But after Olsen decides to leave to fight in the Civil War, Vivienne is left to fend for herself against a cutthroat businessman, his unhinged son, and a deceptively friendly mayor, who could unravel their lives completely. Vivienne must shoulder the fight alone in a great deal of this extremely satisfying and implicitly feminist western. And that’s not the only struggle: When Olsen returns from the war, he and Vivienne must confront and make peace with the people they have each become. “A lean and brutally authentic tale bolstered by outstanding performances from Mortensen, the versatile Vicky Krieps and a terrific supporting cast”–Richard Roeper,
Chicago Sun-Times.
