The beautiful mountains of Norway provide a stunning frame for director Margreth Olin’s existential portrait of generations of life alongside Norway’s most scenic valley. Themes of love, death, memory, and time are explored as Olin’s father guides us through the gorgeous landscape. As he hikes forward over glaciers, across frozen lakes, and through vibrant forests, Olin retrospectively looks back at the love between her father and mother and how they lived in harmony with the nature surrounding them. Songs of Earth is told over the course of four seasons and explores her parents’ lives, the tragedies they’ve endured, the love they’ve experienced, and what they expect in the future to come. Grandiose cinematography combines with an exquisitely pointed soundscape to create one of the most awe-inspiring documentaries of this year and a theatrical experience simply incomparable to anything else. “A remarkable, poetic meditation, Songs of Earth weaves the smallness of human lifespan into the grandness of the Earth’s history, and does it all with unspeakable beauty”—Alissa Wilkinson, Vox. No one who appreciates Maine or nature itself should miss this extraordinary film, executive produced by Liv Ullmann and Wim Wenders.
