These richly decorated surfaces, littered with a wide range of objects including coins, keys, pencils, paintbrushes, broken wood, papers, text, extend beyond the practical confines of the canvas, while simultaneously creating different levels of pictorial space for the viewer.

The visual chaos created on the surface of these works is intended to mirror the complex thoughts and emotions that comprise the shared human experience.

Ryan Kohler is a Maine-based painter who resides in Skowhegan, Maine with his wife, Australian Shepherds, studio cats, and a handful of chickens.
