No one gets left behind! No one gets left behind!
Sheryl Hoover’s (Toni Collette) family can be described as many things, but perhaps the most apt term is “dysfunctional.” Her husband Richard (Greg Kinnear) is a failing motivational speaker, her brother Frank (Steve Carell)—a Proust scholar—is recovering from a suicide attempt, her older son Dwayne (Paul Dano) has taken a vow of silence until he successfully becomes a fighter pilot, and her daughter Olive (Abigail Breslin) is an aspiring beauty queen being coached by Richard’s father Edwin (Alan Arkin in an Oscar-winning role), who was recently kicked out of his nursing home for snorting heroin. When Olive unexpectedly qualifies for the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant in two days, the Hoovers pile into their yellow Volkswagen and embark on a heartwarmingly chaotic 800-mile journey to California.
Little Miss Sunshine is “a sweet, tart, and smart satire about a family of losers in a world obsessed with winning”—
