Choose-Your-Own Kelly Reichardt Film

Maine Film Center

With First Cow named the best film of 2020 by the New York Film Critics Circle and nominated for a slew of awards after its initial release, Kelly Reichardt is increasingly gaining mainstream attention for her films. Dr. Matthew Holtmeier and Dr. Chelsea Wessels – Assistant Professors and Co-Directors of the Film and Media Studies program at East Tennessee State University – led a discussion on February 17, 2020 on Kelly Reichardt and her filmography, offering insight into some of the key themes and formal patterns across her feature films beginning with River of Grass in 1994. As someone who often writes, directs, and edits her own films, Reichardt tells smaller stories about environments and the precarious lives of the individuals that inhabit them, which resonates with current concerns regarding economic uncertainty, climate change, and gendered power relations.
