Originally releasing in 1982 with a rather limited theatrical run and accompanied by a broadcast on PBS,
I Heard it Through the Grapevine received very little of the attention it deserves. The documentary follows prolific writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin as he retraces his time in the 1960s Deep South during the Civil Rights Movement, offering insight on the movement while reflecting on and reassessing it with two decades of perspective. As the battle for civil rights continues in the United States, Baldwin's musings, observations, and perspective are even more important as he "lays bare the fiction of progress in post-Civil Rights America—wondering 'what happened to those who did not die, but whose lives were smashed on Freedom Road.'"—Rich Blint, Baldwin scholar (via
