This classic sci-fi film features both a young Leslie Nielsen in a dramatic role as well as the first fully electronic Hollywood film score, composed by experimental musicians Bebe and Louis Barron. Credited as “electronic tonalities,” the Barrons’ soundscape creates alien technology, spaces, and creatures and reflects American anxieties about what it meant to be a (white, male) human after the nuclear age. While electronic music was well-established in experimental music and arts spaces, this film marks a major turning point in public exposure to the genre, further evidence of film music as a home for avant-garde and modernist music often cast as inaccessible for mainstream audiences.
