When Ezra—an extraordinarily bright and thoroughly winning autistic 11-year-old—is expelled from school, his separated parents Max (Bobby Cannavale) and Jenna (Rose Byrne) disagree on what to do with their son. Max is largely influenced by the old-school views of his father Stan (a perfectly grouchy and funny Robert De Niro), while Jenna wants to put Ezra in a special school. When Max’s struggling stand-up comedy career is offered a second life by an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he knows he doesn’t want to be without Ezra…so he kidnaps him (though Ezra is quite willing to go). The two embark on a cross-country road trip to the taping, encountering outrageous situations and becoming even closer in the process.

“Perhaps the greatest joy of Ezra is the stellar performance of William Fitzgerald. He is on the autism spectrum himself and absolutely nails a believable performance as a kid who can infuriate a parent in one second and melt their heart the other. It takes a lot to go toe to toe with De Niro, but the young actor makes it look effortless.”—Andy Howell, Film Threat.
