Lucille Ball (Nicole Kidman) and Desi Arnez (Javier Bardem) are sitting on top of the world in 1961—or are they? Yes, they have the biggest show on TV, during a time when there were only 3 networks. Yes, they are talented, funny and powerful, Lucy a woman who’s really running the (literal) show, and Desi a handsome Cuban making it big in America as both a musician and actor in a time when that certainly was NOT the norm for anyone who was a Latino. But the House Un-American Activities Committee is investigating Lucy as a "Communist," the network is getting nervous and…is Desi having affairs rather than those "poker nights" that happen 5 days a week? Kidman and Bardem may not literally resemble the real-life Lucy and Desi, but they are just plain terrific, and Writer-Director Aaron Sorkin (THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7, THE WEST WING) has written one heck of a snappy, funny film that encases a surprisingly contemporary sensibility that has nothing to do with phony nostalgia at all.
