Beginning Clay: Hand Building

Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28, March 7, 14

5:30 - 7:00

Ticonic Gallery + Studios

Ticonic Clay Studio, 93 Main St, Waterville

Roxanne Stevenson, an experience clay artist and Ticonic Clay Studio member, will lead this class focusing on a key hand building technique known as slab construction. Students will begin with using a machine, much like a rolling pin called a slab roller, to create artwork with flat “sheets” of clay. These sheets will be cut and attached together to create the bottom and walls of vessels.

The following class will focus on manipulating the vessel to create desired surface designs and additive or subtractive carving. Students will also learn about making lids and handles for their vessels. Students finish up with glazing, adding over and underglaze in varying colors, using brushes and sponging techniques to depth and focal points.

The series includes a 25-pound bag of clay, all necessary glazes, and all kiln firings during the class period. Each student can access the studio outside of class and students will take home finished work.

All levels of experience are welcome! First time clay artists will be given individual attention and more experienced artists may work at their desired pace. Students will be given studio key cards, allowing access to the studio space out side of class.
