A breakout performance by Marisa Abela (best known for HBO’s Industry and a supporting role in a little movie called Barbie), powers Back to Black, the dramatic version of Amy Winehouse’s rise to music stardom from unlikely origins. Abela actually did all the singing herself, a tipoff to how not-by-the-numbers this biopic is. Based on Winehouse’s life and the tumultuous relationship that she ultimately spun into one of the best loved and biggest selling records of its time, Back to Black is one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year.
