The first Kenyan film to screen at the Cannes Film Festival, Rafiki follows Nairobi teenagers Kena and Ziki as they navigate their illegal same-sex attraction and courtship. The scrutiny of their community is heightened because their fathers are running for office against each other. The film was banned in Kenya, where homosexuality is illegal, which only demonstrates its continuing relevance. Directed by Kenyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu, Rafiki is full of "striking visual pleasures and moving performances" –L.A. Times.
