No other film is quite like 3 Women, Robert Altman’s dream film, made during a period in which he had unlimited creative freedom after the commercial and critical successes of Nashville, Thieves Like Us (both starring a very different version of Shelley Duvall, a then-untrained actress spotted by Altman at a party), M.A.S.H., and The Long Goodbye. But 3 Women is something else entirely. Co-starring MIFF Mid-Life Achievement Award honoree Sissy Spacek and Janice Rule, in 3 Women, Millie Lammoreaux (Duvall) considers herself irresistible to men—unfortunately, men actually have little trouble resisting her. Timid teenager Pinky Rose (Spacek), Millie's fellow physical therapist and roommate at a singles-only apartment building, at first appears worshipful and envious of Millie's self-confidence. As the two work together at a desert spa and interact with the owners of a tavern/shooting range, Pinky begins to take over aspects of Millie's personality as chaos threatens to unfold. “I have seen it many times, been through it twice in shot-by-shot analysis, and yet it always seems to be happening as I watch it. Recurring dreams are like that”—Roger Ebert.
