Up in Waterville Public Library’s Carnegie Art Gallery now: “Outside the Box”, a Jessica Morton exhibition!
“While some artists are eager to unveil their works, others keep the curtain on. Some works remain in a box, dormant and unframed. At the same time, some artists keep their skills and works hidden, whether out of fear, competition, or resolves borne out of perfectionism. For this exhibit, the phrase “outside the box” holds a dual meaning: the art is displayed to a large public for the first time, and the artist takes her first steps into the public world of art after years of building up her artistic abilities.
“From observational studies and sketches, to a recollection of an eye-opening day, the artist weaves images and stories with her long-treasured medium of graphite.”
Jessica is an illustrative artist living in Waterville, Maine, whose artistic pursuits were sparked by her interests in video games and fantasy stories. She currently attends University of Maine at Augusta for her Bachelor of Arts degree. Her graphic story, 7/31/18: My Day of Discovery, was awarded for Excellence in Drawing during the 2019 UMA Student Show; her 2019 senior thesis, Melissa’s Story: How I Got Here, a narrative excerpt of her working story, was awarded the university’s Art Faculty Purchase Prize.
