Though Spike Lee first came to moviegoers’ attention with SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT, it was DO THE RIGHT THING that really defined him as a filmmaker and unofficial cultural spokesperson. Finally, an independent black filmmaker was able to bring community and viewpoints to a huge audience only the cinema could harness. No coincidence that DO THE RIGHT THING had that force: it was and remains a powerful statement about race and racism in the U.S., through the lens of one sweltering summer day in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. The great cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, John Turturro, Rosie Petez, Giancarlo Esposito, John Savage and, of course, Lee himself.
