Stop by Railroad Square Cinema to view Summer Romance by Angela Anderson.
My Romantic Series paintings are oil stains on sized canvas appropriating (mainly) women in art historical images. At the time I began the series, I was a model for painter Philip Pearlstein in New York. We visited the Met together to see a show of paintings on loan from the Hermitage, and Boucher’s Hercules and Omphale took my breath away.
I projected the b/w copy from the book accompanying the exhibition in my West 23rd St. loft studio, poured paint can remains from oil paintings and sludge from the paint solids in turpentine, turned syrup. Rene Ricard, New York Art Critic (and Maine native) declared them “better than Boucher” the only time he ever visited my studio. I adored him from a distance and don’t think he realized that.
These paintings are set apart in the technique and subject as a specific series in subject and style form most of my artwork. – Angela Anderson
