Aqua City Actors Theatre (ACAT) opens their 2017-2018 season—MAINE, MANNERS AND MAYHEM—with Jeffrey Hatcher’s semi-autobiographical comedy, Mrs. Mannerly. Performances are Oct. 20-21 and 27-28 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 22 and 29 at 2 p.m. in Studio 93 at The Center, 93 Main St., Waterville.
Directed by Stephanie Irwin, Mrs. Mannerly features Margaret Matheson in the title role, Andrew Smith as her prize student Jeffrey, and Ben Turlo in a number of roles as Jeffrey’s male and female classmates. Mrs. Mannerly is director Irwin’s first full-length show for ACAT, having directed one-acts for ACAT in the past. Most recently, she has directed plays at Lakewood Theater each summer season. Irwin has a BA in Theater from USM and has directed for theaters in both Maine and Missouri.
Inspired by hilarious memories of a childhood etiquette class in Steubenville, Ohio, in 1967, playwright Jeffrey Hatcher conjures up the world of a 10-year-old who is studying manners. Mrs. Mannerly is a demanding teacher, and no student in her 36 years of etiquette classes has achieved a perfect score. But when he discovers her secret past, young Jeffrey is determined to be the first to achieve this feat. This unique comic tale reveals truths about the face we present and the real selves that lie inside.
“The show is very well written and reminds me of my childhood—It is that universal,” says director Irwin. “Jeffrey has one wish: to be smooth and debonair like his heroes on 60s television. He is the perfect candidate for Mrs. Mannerly’s School of Manners and wants to excel as the most polite boy in town. Everyone has a special teacher that recognized their talents and helped them to be their best. In this comedy, you get to see that relationship evolve.”
General admission tickets are $15.00 for adults
