The Maine Poetry Out Loud, a national poetry recitation contest, will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at the Waterville Opera House, 93 Main Street, Waterville. The snow date is Tuesday, March 20, 2018.
The doors will open at 2:30 p.m. for a 3 p.m. performance start. The event is free and open to the public. It will also be broadcast and streamed live throughout Maine in collaboration with Boothbay Region Television on the BRTV station and through Facebook Live on the Maine Arts Commission’s Facebook page. The event will be emceed by Maine Public Radio host Jennifer Rooks, and feature live performances as well as readings from Maine Poet Laureate, Stuart Kestenbaum.
The Maine state champion will receive $200 and a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books for to the winner’s school. The runner-up will receive $100 and $200 for his or her school library. The state champion will also receive an all-expenses-paid trip (with a chaperone) to compete in the National Finals in Washington, D.C. on April 23-25, 2018. The Poetry Out Loud National Finals will award a total of $50,000 in scholarships and school stipends, with a $20,000 college scholarship provided to the Poetry Out Loud National Champion.
