Jordia Benjamin is a native Bahamian hailing from the island of New Providence but moved to the United States in her final year of High School. She has lived, studied and worked throughout the United States and abroad. Jordia traded the tropical weather to relocate to Waterville in 2016. Since moving to Maine, she has worked tirelessly in bridging the community and student organizations to collaborate with the Colby Museum. Waterville has provided Jordia a sense of serenity and a growing appreciation for the state, calling it a ‘living artwork’; as you are consistently reminded of the surrounding aesthetics no matter the season. ’’I’m from paradise, so I know what beauty looks like and Maine is a scenic state with miles of breathtaking coastal lines, quaint towns, mountain ranges, valleys, forests, lakes and rivers’’ says Jordia. Her hope is that all Mainers recognize the gem that is theirs; the environment, local museums and the arts, as well the community organizations and local businesses. ”Waterville is a home to hardworking and caring people that do their best in making sure everyone feels welcomed and belong. It’s a very neighborly atmosphere just like what I’m accustom to on the island”. She is proud of the developments she has witnessed (especially the revitalization of downtown) and is very optimistic about the future of Waterville. Jordia believes, there is much growth and opportunities on the horizon for local residents. In her free time, Jordia loves to travel and experience what different cultures offer. She loves trying new cuisines, browsing museums and galleries, going to festivals and concerts and simply enjoying life to the fullest.
