Fall Migration Talk at the Waterville Opera House @ 6:00pm
Waterville, Maine — Common Street Arts, the programmatic arm of Waterville Creates!, is pleased to present a lecture on Fall Migration by Bernd Heinrich, a professor emeritus in the biology department at the University of Vermont and author of numerous books related to his research examining the adaptations of animals and plants to their physical environments. This free event, including the pre-lecture reception at Common Street Arts, is open to the public and will begin at 5:00pm on Thursday, October 12th. The event will start at Common Street Arts and then move to the Waterville Opera House at 6:00pm for Bernd’s lecture. No advance registration is required.
This lecture is a collaboration with the exhibition currently on view, Into the Forest work by Barbara Sullivan and Juliet Karelsen. Heinrich will discuss the fall bird migration and its contrast with other animals in terms of why and how they travel great distances. A topic of many dimensions, fall migration involves behavior, physiology, and ecology. There are also migratory similarities and differences between birds, mammals, insects, and fish that Bernd will explore through colorful tales of his experiences growing up in Maine.
Bernd Heinrich was a resident and student at Good Will in Hinckley from 1953 to 1959. His years at Good Will had a huge influence on who he was to become. He derived much from the fabulous expanse of nature, trails through the woods, and the culture of nature study that the school “inherited” from the influence of the founder, the Rev. George Walter Hinckley. Bernd received a B.A. in Zoology from the University of Maine, Orono in 1964, an M.S. in Zoology from the University of Maine, Orono in 1966 and a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1970.
A University of Vermont Professor Emeritus of Biology, awarded the John Burroughs Medal for his contributions to the field of naturalist writing, and elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Bernd Heinrich has authored numerous books and scholarly articles. His latest book is One Wild Bird at a Time: Portraits of Individual Lives.
